Six
weeks on and I doubt whether you have read a lot about it in the
national media. Hardly surprising when Blair is hell bent on replacing
the British Trident missile system at a cost of £25 billion.
Currently
Britain has 4 nuclear powered Trident submarines each carrying up
to 48 nuclear warheads each with a killing power 7 times that of
the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima killing 140,000 people.
These
Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) are based at Faslane on Gareloch
north of the Clyde from which regular patrols of the the high seas
take place. This is not a defence system and as a nuclear deterrent,
the implication, indeed the intention, of use is clear. Its range
of 12,000km extends well into Asia.
Any
Trident replacement programme violates Article 6 of the nuclear
non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) signed by 185 countries including
the U.K., the U.S.A., Russia, China and France - permanent members
of the Security Council of the United Nations (UN).
It
calls for the ABOLITION of nuclear weapons. Article 4 asks
that countries wanting to develop nuclear power are AIDED.
What hypocrisy that Iran should be told it cannot have nuclear power
whilst our government tells us we need these ludicrous WMD, as Trident
surely is.
Faslane
365 is a year long peaceful initiative to highlight the nuclear
debate and to let autonomous groups and organizations demonstrate
the range of serious concerns from human rights to climate change.
To
date towns and regions in the U.K., international groups and organizations
as diverse as Northern Quakers, Greenpeace, Journalists, Academics,
CND and Plaid Cymru have spent 2 days, in rotation, at Faslane.
Individuals
in Hull have signed up and Stop the War Coalition is hoping to link
with York.
