of Beverley at the hands of Humberside Police.
Simon Murden died at the hands of the police in March 2005. The inquest
is being held from mid-Feb to end March 2008. The venue is the Octagon
Centre, Hull.
Hull Daily Mail reports:
(1)

WEAPONS FOUND IN SIMON'S ROOM

THE FRANTIC CALLS
(5)
HE HAD THREE SWORDS
-
Beverley charity worker Simon Murden
had three African swords with him
-
Simon
was found with 13 bullet wounds.
-
At one stage he was driving on the wrong side of the
carriageway
-
about two-thirds of a mile from where he was shot, Mr
Murden collided with a car
-
armed police had been told by witnesses he may have
been carrying something that may have been a firearm.
-
he had smashed up his bedroom at their home and had
left over the roof.
-
Simon was "very, very paranoid" and that he
believed the episode may have been induced after smoking cannabis a
couple of days previously.
-
Mr Cameron was the only person at yesterday's inquest
who said Simon was found to have three swords with him as he walked
along the A63.
-
There was no description given as to how he was
holding the swords.
-
the officers involved, A-F, have been granted
anonymity.
-
Officer D fired two shots from a baton gun, which
fires rubber bullets, and one shot from a pistol.
-
Officer C fired nine shots from a carbine automatic
weapon.
-
The pistol shot from Officer D and five shots from the
carbine of Officer C hit Mr Murden.
-
The fatal shooting - the only one in the history of
Humberside Police - was initially investigated by the IPCC which
passed its findings on to the CPS to decide if any criminal charges
should be brought.
-
Ken Macdonald QC, DPP, announced in Oct 2006 they
would not face charges.
-
Mr Macdonald said Mr Murden had been behaving in an
"unpredictable manner", carrying a "form of weaponry
that was capable of inflicting fatal injuries".
-
The family's appeal was turned down.
(6) SIX BULLETS, ANY ONE OF THEM FATAL
-
many of them could have been
"independently fatal".
-
Dr
Shorrock told the hearing he found a total of 13 bullet wounds on the
26-year-old's body.
-
Dr Shorrock revealed how he believed injuries caused
from just one bullet would have been enough to kill Simon.
-
one wound as being "far steeper" than the
others, and said this could have been caused by the shot being fired
as Simon was seated, as he was getting up or as he was falling
forward.
-
"Entry one was completely different. It is stand
alone. You suggested he may have been falling forward when this shot
was fired. However, there is another possibility.
"It is possible the wound could have been caused as Simon was
sitting on the ground, the shooter approaches and fires from a foot
and a half away." Dr Shorrock confirmed this was a possibility.
-
witnesses hadtelephoned the police saying they had
seen a blue Ford Transit van driving westbound on the eastbound
carriageway of the A63 in a "challenging" way.
-
He was also told it had collided head-on with a car.
-
He said Simon was then reported to have gone into a
petrol station to try to get hold of another vehicle. He left and was
pursued on foot by officers, who Simon is alleged to have threatened
close to the Little Chef at North Cave.Dr Shorrock said he had noted
at the time two baton rounds of plastic bullets were then fired at
Simon.
-
He said Simon was then reported to have fallen to the
ground, but had got up again, walking towards the police officers, and
it was then they discharged firearms at him.
