The BBC politics section broke the news first, for me, that no vote happened on the Iraq debate due to government providing no tellers to count it with, the job of the government whips. I sense tremors there given that last October they won a vote on Iraq by a mere 25. Earlier Tony Blair rejected a Lib Dem proposal to remove troops by October: setting an "arbitrary timetable" for troop withdrawal was "a policy which, whatever its superficial attractions may be, is actually deeply irresponsible", he said. What was deeply irresponsible - Mr Blair - was allying yourself to Bush's god-forsaken crusade in Iraq in the first place. What was deeply irresponsible is the pressure brought to bear on professionals in intelligence to produce the answers you wanted, answers which turned out to be untruths, as those who propagated them would discover, and lies - for you - who did know better. It clearly wasn't a hard sell to you as notes show you earlier in 2002 up for it, with your chief concern bringing the British people with you while Mr Bush "fitted the facts" around the policy. There is nothing "irresponsible" about troop withdrawal. Nothing. The invading armies are hated. By the majority. Unquestionably. The people voted for your going but it's Washington's wishes that hold sway. So let Washington have it. Now is an IDEAL time. George is putting in 21,500 more troops who will work magic... Our measly 8,000 could hand over the Basra area very quickly to American forces. Why should British troops continue to kill and die in a war for Bush, for Cheney, for Halliburton and Bechtel, for profits, for exploitation, for oil? Why have 655,000 Iraqis had to die to satisfy Tony and George's blood lust, and power lust, and cravings to satisfy their friends in banks and business and oil? Sops from Iraq propagandize us daily about this province having been "pacified", or how another 20,000 troops will win it, or which schools or hospitals are now open. But that is not Iraq's real story. They are the fig leaves you and your supporters hide behind to trot out with vigour and conviction and your very own patented brand of smarmy, patronizing, arrogance as if you could possibly know best. I hear you are going in April. Good riddance, may you take your legacy with you. And may the deaths you have aided and abetted haunt you the rest of your days. But the cause of true peace and justice for the people of Iraq will continue, and you and your supporters will be remembered for having been on the wrong side. |
