Lobbying sees ERYC sign Nottingham Declaration 10.1.07

East Riding of Yorkshire Council has finally signed the Nottingham Declaration improving, at least, our region's rhetorical stance on climate crisis.

This follows hot on the heels of ERYC passing planning for the Incinerator before Christmas and Hull adding fuel to the fire last Monday when councillors voted 7-5 for the Incinerator to go ahead.

Typically the steps a Council takes on climate action include:

  • growth in the Council's own energy conservation
  • the Council becoming carbon neutral
  • growth in provision of renewable energy sources (wind, sun, sea)
  • promotion of energy conservation
  • growth in recycling rates
  • decline in waste rates

We will watch closely for progress in these areas.

Both Councils could do worse than consider Woking's climate change strategy (here PDF ). Woking has built a CHP (Combined Heat and Power) is self-funding.

Woking is piloting plans for a Zero Waste strategy. Woking plans to recycle organic material by compost, anaerobic digestion and gasification. These plans include reducing its landfill requirement by 90%.

Despite Woking's hard work there are plans for up to six incinerators in Surrey to deal with the present 600,000 tonnes of waste.

Presently there are plans for 22 new incinerators natonwide.
