Magic carpet goings on in Newland |

Is Leightons setting up for Tesco? Leighton Carpets of Hessle Road is pursuing a planning
application for its Newland Ave shop. The application (1) proposes to alter the shop front with: ·
new doorways, ·
a trolley bay, ·
a cash machine, ·
5 anti-ram raid bollards, ·
3 air conditioning units, and a ·
2.5m fence This is a lot of change for a carpet shop. Rumour has it that giant retailer Tesco is recently
interested in Leighton Carpets. It is not impossible, therefore, that
Leighton carries out these major changes to the shop and is then bought by
Tesco who promptly gut the carpet shop and set up a Tesco convenience
store. So the question is: Is there a secret deal ? The shop at the top end of Newland Avenue, near the junction with Cottingham Road, would be an ideal location for a small supermarket seeking to make inroads into an otherwise densely populated business area. Is
anyone asking questions about what may be really going on?? The
deadline for objections passes on the 30th November (extended
because of a revision in the application). Objections can be sent to – Planning

So I suspect this application is for a supermarket. We need to be encouraging small traders not huge retailers like Tesco whose name is being rumoured as connected with this development in the background. I understand the car park is also to be at their disposal. Such a development would lead to significant further traffic congestion. Enquiries should be made along these lines and undertakings received as to the nature of what is really going on. |
