Dear Councillor, It has been brought to my attention that the East Riding of Yorkshire Council is not yet a signatory to the Nottingham Declaration. The Nottingham Declaration* is a commitment by local authorities to take the threat of climate change seriously. Over 160 Councils** have signed up to it including – Hull, Nottingham, Sheffield, Leeds, Kirklees, North Lincs, North Tyneside, Lancashire… By signing, the Council would commit to actively tackle climate change in the area and work with others to reduce emissions country-wide. Individual communities can also benefit significantly. Energy use can be cut and environmental performance can be improved leading to significant cost savings. Citizens and property can also be protected from threats posed by a changing climate such as flooding, in this most threatened of areas. At some stage I hope this will be highlighted for the Council to sign up to. I hope you feel there would be ready support for it at Council, especially yours. Yours sincerely, * The Nottingham Declaration (PDF)
