Go Green Week 16-24 Feb

Martin Deane was up at Hull University this week to join their campaign on Go Green Week, the first national Go Green Week that People and Planet have organised.

“Many universities are the size of small towns," says Mr Deane, "Hull university has 16,000 people at it. They can have a huge impact on the environment, whether for better or for worse.”  Mr Deane is Secretary of Hull and East Riding Green Party.

“There are many things the University can implement, such as energy saving light bulbs, ensuring lights are only on when they need to be and recycling all paper, that will not only be good for the environment but save the Union and University money.”

He would like to see cycling being encouraged further and all essays submitted electronically. He believes that looking at the Green League table (see People & Planet website) is a way to start making change.

Currently, Hull University is floundering in the bottom 50% of the Green League for its environmental policies, with a measly 23 out of 50 rating. Compared to other Yorkshire universities, Leeds Met in prime position with 48/50, Leeds University and Sheffield Hallam with 40/50, Hull certainly could do better.

Aisling Devine, President of People and Planet at Hull, says; "We need an Environmental Manager at Hull University to create a more unified approach towards becoming environmentally friendly". Although nothing has been decided for definite, the Vice Chancellor says he is looking into the feasibility of employing an Environmental Manager.

People and Planet is a national network of students who endeavour to raise awareness of world poverty, human rights and environmental issues. Go Green Week aimed to inform people of green issues and also encourage universities to become more environmentally friendly.

People and Planet also held a petition to call on senior management at the University to implement strong environmentally friendly procedures throughout campus and halls of residence.
