Yorkshire CND groups and Contacts Mailing Jan/Feb ’08

Dear Hull Stop the War / CND

I have put this email together in the hope of keeping CND groups and supportive groups in the region up to date on forthcoming activities and events.

Please find enclosed in this email some information about future events that we very much hope you will get involved in.

We aim to build maximum support from CND groups and supportive organisations across the region – as you will see, already 2008 is off to a flying start!

  1. US Missile Defence – Meeting in Leeds, February 22nd
  2. CND’s 50th Anniversary
  3. Hiroshima & Nagasaki commemorations

  1. US Missile Defence

As you may be aware, the issue of US Missile Defence is of increasing importance. With the 2 bases in our region, Menwith Hill and Fylingdales now both fully confirmed as key facilities of US Missile Defence, Yorkshire is of growing international importance.

Campaigners in Poland and the Czech Republic are working to prevent Missile Defence bases in their countries – and we must not forget Tony Blair’s offer to host interceptor missiles in Britain has not been revoked.

At this crucial time, we are working on a number of events to promote the No to US Missile Defence Campaign in our region.

The first of these events is an ‘Opposing US Missile Defence: A Yorkshire Perspective’ meeting in Leeds on Friday 22nd February.

This meeting takes place in Leeds Civic Hall at 7pm and speakers include;

Lord Wallace of Saltaire – who recently introduced the very interesting debate on Britain’s involvement in US Missile Defence in the House of Lords.

Fabian Hamilton MP – Member of the influential parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee, which recently condemned the Government for the timing and manner of the announcement abut Menwith Hill being used for US Missile Defence.

Jon Trickett MP – A key supporter of the campaign who has spoken out against Britain’s role in US Missile Defence and who helped table EDM 65; ‘Parliament and Decisions over US Missile Defence’. (http://edmi.parliament.uk/EDMi/EDMDetails.aspx?EDMID=34155&SESSION=891)

 Kate Hudson – CND chair

Lindis Percy – From Campaign for the Accountability of American Bases. A key local campaigner.

The meeting will be chaired by Professor Dave Webb from Yorkshire CND.

The breadth of political and public opposition to Britain’s role in this deadly programme is growing. Now is our time to push the campaign forward.

We would like each CND and supporting group in the region to try and send at least one representative to this meeting on February 22nd. It will be a unique opportunity to hear such a broad range of speakers, and groups will be able to benefit from hearing about the current key issues and future campaign techniques.

Please contact me in the Yorkshire CND office on 01274 730795 or via sarah@yorkshirecnd.org.uk to confirm your groups representation.

We have a variety of materials and resources available for groups wishing to promote the ‘No to US Missile Defence’ campaign. Please contact the office to order.

Missile Defence Q&A fact sheet

  1. CND’s 50th Anniversary

2008 marks CND’s 50th anniversary, and we plan to help mark this very important anniversary in the region.

The first key event is ‘Aldermaston 2008 – The Bomb Stops Here!’ (http://www.cnduk.org/aldermaston/)

We are planning to join with thousands of activists from across the country to surround the base at Aldermaston. We have to make it clear that we will celebrate our successes over the past 50 years, but we aren’t going anywhere until the nuclear weapons are gone – what better way than to do this at Aldermaston?

To do this we need help. We need to get as many people down to Aldermaston on March 24th (Bank Holiday Easter Monday) to surround the base. It would be brilliant to see coaches making the trip from across the region to join up at the ‘Yorkshire Gate’ on the day. We are planning lots of visual entertainment, food and music – for the whole family, so get planning!

This is really one of those ‘if you don’t do anything else this year do this’ type of events, and after the tremendous impact Yorkshire made on the Faslane 365 campaign, there should be no stopping us.

Yorkshire CND are more than happy to help with co-ordinating transport and sorting logistics, but we need YOUR GROUP to fill a bus from your area.

Please raise this at your next meeting and confirm that you will be joining us on the day.

We have resource packs and leaflets in the office – just let us know how many you need.

This event is guaranteed to generate huge press interest, and could perhaps spark fundraising ideas in your area. Please be creative and let’s make it a day to remember!

  1. Hiroshima & Nagasaki commemorations

It seems a long way off, but the date will soon creep up so perhaps now is the time to start thinking about how to mark the anniversaries of the devastation caused by the use of nuclear bombs in Nagasaki & Hiroshima.

In this, CND’s 50th year, it seems especially important for us to reflect on our aims, our achievements and our future work.

In Bradford, we are working on ideas for a candlelit water vigil in the city centre, and hope to work with local youth groups to mark the occasion.

If you need any help organising or advertising your event, please get in touch.

This year is a crucial point in our campaigning. Our work to oppose Trident Replacement has had a huge impact and we must continue to push for a safer nuclear-free world. We must expose the devastation that will be caused if US Missile Defence is allowed to continue. The work of CND groups and supporting groups across the region helps keep our message strong.

Please do get in touch if there is anything we can help you with from the office – whether it be a press release or helping organise a meeting.

I look forward to hearing from you.

 Kind Regards,

 Sarah
