At a well-attended meeting Hull CAAT supporters heard from two CAAT speakers about the allegations of corrupt payments of probably over £1 BILLION pounds by BAe Systems to Saudi Arabian officials. The Serious Fraud Office dropped the investigation earlier this year on the instructions of Downing Street. The reason given was the cover-all "national security"... (surely a Serious Fraud itself...)
The speakers covered the material in detail and recommended we write to MPs and newspapers, etc. Various points can be made: the trial should go ahead, Britain has signed an international treaty against corruption and should lead by example, many countries are looking to us for this.
Local police too showed interest in the meeting. Police contacted organisers a few days before enquiring as to what the event was about, possible numbers expected and whether campaigners were happy that they would be having a peaceful meeting.
CAAT nationally has a postcard campaign to MP's, and a petition too. They are also asking people to write a letter to the Prime Minister.
